The new West Baden Springs Hotel opened in to extremely positive reviews, and its mineral water baths were said to cure darn-near anything.

The hotel featured a casino, live performances each night, movies, bowling, and billiards. Outdoor activities included golf, the largest oval bicycle track in the country, horseback riding, and more.

For their abundance of wealthy clients they featured a bank and stock brokerage on-site. The hotel was known worldwide as a playground for the wealthy, and then everything changed. The stock market crash of cleared the hotel almost immediately. No one had money to spend a week at the ultra-luxurious hotel anymore. By the s, the seminary closed and the hotel was eventually donated to a private college, the Northwood Institute, who ran the place into the s.

The college took decent care of the place, but when they sold it to a real estate firm that would quickly go bankrupt, all hell broke loose. In West Baden was listed as a National Historic Landmark but the elements took their toll on the neglected hotel and it was closed to the public in for safety reasons.

Keep up with all my car adventures on social media Austin Coop "He got a tattoo on his arm it says 'baby. Our family has stayed here or at the French Lick Hotel several times. The dining is excellent and the spa is amazing. It is a lovely location for a girl's weekend or a romantic getaway.

Such a remarkable difference from just 20 years ago! The dome was once Northwood Institute, and my aunt was the switchboard operator. My siblings and I would staywith her and she would take us to work with her in the summer.

We had free reign of the entire lower floor as long as we behaved. I fell in love with the place then, and was devastated to see it fall into such a state of disrepair. Now, it is a thing of great beauty and anyone near the area should come and see it.

Walk the gardens and see the dome. Stay the night and enjoy their awesome restaurants as well! Jeff thank you for the history and pictures. I love to go visit there and have stated a few times since returning from Florida in Travelsisters1 Just stayed there in Nov It is truly the most amazing hotel that I have ever seen.

I travel for a living, so I have stayed in some pretty wonderful hotels! This took my breadth away! Make sure to get a balcony room, overlooking the atrium. Lost in a house fire but, I do remember it stating there were 12 million tiles incorporated into the original floor. Then my dad was hired to be a Prof there in my college years. My oldest daughter worked there for a short time when they first opened.

My family has LOTS of memories of that place and of it's sister hotel a mile away! This place is spectacular!

The atrium, lovely tile floor, stained glass and art work make it a feast for the eyes. We were there in March and would like to return when the gardens are in bloom. Wonderful, friendly staff as well! On a few rainy days, the entire marching band practice occurred inside the atrium. Even then I had an interest in architecture, and truly hoped someone would restore the entire property to its original glory. The architecture, the grounds, everything was just stunning.

So glad to see the change. Austin Coop Can't wait to snap some photos myself! It's even more wonderful in person, really worth a visit. Keep exploring with the Roadtrippers mobile apps. Anything you plan or save automagically syncs with the apps, ready for you to hit the road!

I hope to return for a longer stay in the future. I had more experience through the staff side of the hostel, and the underlying core values that Lost River revealed to my perspective. In particular their desire for personal and community growth really resonates within my being. However, you as a guest who is interested in this location The guest house was designed by the founder, but then gave the freedom and trust for his revolving staff members to accomplish.

And they did a fabulous job! There are several themed rooms to choose from, but you're going to be wanting to really be outside in nature for most of your stay. At least that's what I would assume.

There's a refreshing, secluded lake, a large outdoor bath and shower house open to the outdoors There's hiking trails, a labyrinth in the making You can use it as a getaway or you can join in the activities of the staff as well I've already been trying to spread the word to my close friends and family.

I'm excited to return! Love the Lost River Hostel, Scott, the staff, and the land! Until we meet again Just a friendly reminder that the leaves are falling here at the hostel Lost River Hostel shared Scott Wheeler 's post. This is one of the most beautiful hotels I have stayed in. The atrium is unique with changing colors in the evening. Ask for a room facing the atrium and you will not be disappointed in the view.
