You WANNA? BLK FEMALE over to check out what I was waiting at. Strong, deep, therapeutic and sensual. Were r all the hot rocker chicks at used to flirt with another woman but she and I became good friends and I just can't do that with friends so I am looking to see if other women would do this.
UCF workout partner m4w waiting for someone to work out with for the sake of support and vice versa. I have two son, that sometime stay with me (shared custody). Do you understand. Waiting for lady to hang out with when not on job.
Longtime music collector and rock music listener. I've been writing articles for over three years. When you think of guitar-driven heavy metal and hard rock, you may not immediately think of a gorgeous golden-haired babe stroking the fretboard on her electric guitar. These ladies are no longer the exception to the rule. These days, women have a definitive place in the hard rock music scene, going to-to-toe with the boys in any band.
Let's take a look at some of these talented ladies. This is by no means meant to be a "Top So, in no particular order, let's rock! At sweet 16 she was a rebel queen and, yes, she sure looked hot in her tight blue jeans. As the lead singer of the all-girl band The Runaways, Cherie Currie was many a young man's fantasy girlfriend. As the years have passed and her biography has been told, it has become apparent that she probably never really was in control in those days, but like many rock and rollers who found the limelight a little overwhelming, she survived and is still gorgeous today.
Lita Ford also got her start with The Runaways but went on to even greater success after the band broke up, selling millions of albums as a solo artist and becoming probably the premiere female guitarist in heavy metal. Most would probably argue that Joan Jett is the better known Runaway refugee, but when it comes to sales and chart positions, Lita comes out well ahead. Lita is still rocking after all these years and is more lovely than ever!
When you think of rock and roll bands, ABBA may not be the first to come to mind. But they were indeed a rock and roll band and, at one time, the most successful band in the world. They even had a song called "Rock and Roll Band. Anni-Frid, more often referred to as Frida, was the brunette. Agnatha was the blond. Both were lovely, but there was always something special about Agnetha.
Sass Jordan plays rock and roll with the swagger of a Rod Stewart or Keith Richards and looks a whole lot better doing it. In addition to playing rock and roll on a par with the bad boys of the music world, she is also an actress and veejay as well as a wife and mother. Pretty awesome I'd say. Apparently, she has also done some modeling work, but I couldn't tell you who she modeled for. The band rocks and Taylor is a great singer. I know she probably has fans that enjoy her acting and modeling, but, personally, I would like to see her devote herself full time to the band.
When it comes to legendary figures in rock and roll, Suzi Quatro is an icon. Sure, there were illustrious women in rock before her — Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips — but Suzi was the first to break through playing real rock guitar.
Usually dressed in black leather, Suzi Quatro was the role model for Joan Jett and showed Joan, as well as the other ladies to follow the rock 'n' roll path, how to put some, well, balls into rock 'n' roll. As the singer of No Doubt, Gwen Stefani hit the charts and became a household name. A few years later, her solo career launched her to even greater fame. Now with No Doubt reformed, though a bit slow on getting out new material, Gwen has kept busy spending time with her second child with husband Gavin Rossdale, guitarist and lead singer of Bush.
Nina Gordon co-founded the group Veruca Salt and was a driving force in the band. She wrote their hits "Seether" and "Volcano Girls" before leaving the band in to pursue a solo career.
She has since released two solo albums and become a mom. Nina is a gifted songwriter and great guitarist in addition to being gorgeous and blond. Canadian Avril Lavigne has packed a lot of success into her few years as a rock star, having released her debut album less than ten years ago. She now has her fourth album, Goodbye Lullaby, due out March 8, She has a clothing line and has released two perfumes as well as embarking on an acting career.
But right now, Avril seems to be concentrating on her music so be sure to watch for to head out on tour soon. Michelle Phillips was not only a member of The Mamas and the Papas, but also co-wrote many of the band's hits including "California Dreamin'". She was also the wife of John Phillips. They had one child, Chynna, who could have also made this list, being both beautiful and a member of the pop group Wilson-Phillips.
After the band broke up, Michelle tried to launch a solo career but could not match the popularity she had found with the band. She did, however, find success as an actress. Even after all these years, Michelle Phillips is still one hot mama! The song was from her second album, Believe.
Guitar International Magazine named her the Breakthrough Guitarist of the Year in and she has been nominated for several other awards. Her captivating guitar skills are highlighted by her flowing blond hair and energetic stage presence. With a sexy voice to match her hot looks, Bonnie Tyler scored big with the hit song "It's a Heartache" in and the again with "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in She has continued to record steadily since then but has not had another major hit on the US charts since "Holding Out for a Hero" that peaked at 34 in But that doesn't mean we can count this lady out.
Do not be surprised if she returns to the charts again with her distinctively seductive voice. Jan Kuehnemund hit the big time with all-girl hard rockers Vixen and had a few years in the spotlight before music tastes changed and hard rock gave way to grunge. Jan was recognized as a great guitarist and though the band officially called it quits in , Jan put together a new line-up in to tour and release a new album.
But unfortunately, the band has been inactive since Liz Phair is the original "indie chick" in music, a title that now belongs to Zooey Deschanel. When she released Exile in Guyville in , it barely hit the Billboard Top , peaking at , and even to date has sold less than a half million copies. Yet it is considered one of the most influential albums of the '90s and frequently pops up on "best album" lists.
Kind of like Liz keeps popping up on hottest rock chicks lists. But then, neither of those accomplishments are surprising considering the quality of the record and the hotness of the singer. Some expected her to do this by moving on to more serious acting roles or perhaps getting her own series where she could be the star, but many were surprised when she decided to do this with music instead.
As Hannah's sidekick, Lilly never showed much aptitude for music, but Emily has certainly proven she has the talent to succeed as a singer. Her music has a harder edge than the pop music Hannah Montana is known for and it would seem Emily has a bright future whether in music or in film. With her husky, sexy voice and gypsy style of dressing, Stevie Nicks captured the imagination of many a man during Fleetwood Mac's heyday of the late '70s. It has even been rumored that The Eagles' song "Witchy Woman" is about Stevie who at one time dated Don Henley, but that seems unlikely since the song refers to "raven hair" and was written well before the couple were an item.
But Stevie is definitely one of the most gorgeous women ever in rock and roll and even today is as lovely as ever. Ritchie Blackmore, famed guitarist of Deep Purple and Rainbow, has a third band that is perhaps not quite as well known as his other two. Blackmore's Night features Ritchie's wife, Candice.
The lady has a magical voice that fits well with the medieval-tinged folk rock the band plays. Some might say "Witchy Woman" would describe Candice better than Stevie as she at times seems to refer to Wiccan or Pagan themes in her music, but she has never stated clearly if she considers herself a follower of either religion. What she has said on the subject is this Torry Castellano, drummer for the all-girl punk rockers The Donnas, is the only drummer girl to make the list.
That surprises me in a way because when Torry plays with her arms pounding out a steady beat and that gorgeous mane of blond locks flying out in all directions, she is smoking hot! The primal beat of the drums seems to bring out the animal is the petite blond, transforming her into a lioness on the prowl for fresh meat!
Joss Stone burst onto the music scene in and hasn't slowed down since. A soul singer with a rock and roll attitude, Joss is both beautiful and talented. Though her hair color changes on a regular basis — occasionally to some rather unusual colors — Joss is definitely hottest as a natural blond. I don't know why she would even want to change! In the mids, there emerged a German goddess to take the crown of ultimate metal maiden.
That goddess was Doro Pesch, lead vocalist of Warlock. With blond hair that shimmers in the sunlight, blue eyes that twinkle in the moonlight, the voice of a hellbound angel, Doro made a mark on metal that will always remain. Though Warlock only made four albums, Doro continued on and is still bringing metal to the masses today. And though she has gotten older, she is as beautiful and sexy as ever.
It would be hard to find any singer—blond female or otherwise—who hit the scene with more of an impact than did Duffy. Her debut album and single, released in , were both international smashes and the following year she was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and nominated for two other Grammy Awards. She also won several awards in her native United Kingdom.
Her delicate features, haunting eyes, and silky blond hair make her one of the most attractive new rock stars in years. Guitarist Nancy Wilson is the blond half of the Wilson duo that fronts legendary rockers Heart. Along with her vocalist sister Ann, Nancy broke through barriers and paved the way for female hard rockers in the years after Heart's breakthrough.
The Wilson sisters' combination of good looks, great songwriting and masterful playing took the band to the top of the charts and pretty much has made them legends. The Genitorturers have been around since in one form or another and often refer to themselves as "The World's Sexiest Band.
And in her black leather dominatrix outfits, Gen has plenty of fans willing to get on their knees for her. Otep Shamaya is the singer and primary songwriter in the band Otep. She made her debut with the band in and quickly developed a devoted fan base. Playing aggressive, loud heavy metal, Otep made a name for herself and her band.
She is a vegetarian and — sorry boys — a lesbian. I thought I would end the list where I began, with The Runaways. Sandy West always seemed to me to be the Runaway that might be the girl that lived down the street./p>
It's heart-wrenching and pure, showing Hunter's natural way with words. Towards the end of the 90s Archie and Ruby would tour schools in Indigenous communities across the country, hosting songwriting workshops and undoubtedly inspiring many. Kat Bjelland 's mix of sexualised baby doll femininity and punk aggression made her one of the 90s most arresting performers.
As lead singer of Babes In Toyland, Bjelland often spat both fury and ominous sweetness in the course of a single song.
They were always best listened to really loud so you could scream about girl stuff along with her. But Bjelland and Babes In Toyland were most powerful in taking so many of the trappings of girl hood — dolls, fairies, virginal white dresses — and recasting them against a primal dissonant for of punk. Written and produced by R. While Blur and Oasis were busy turning Britpop into a global brand, Justine Frischmann was fronting the female alternative to beer-soaked lads' anthems.
She cut her teeth co-founding Suede with Brett Anderson in the late 80s, before coming together with three friends to form Elastica in They separated themselves from the Britpop pack through a smart reinvention of 70s New York art punk, giving them a cool swagger that was hard to ignore. Frischmann was seldom out of the tabloids due to her relationship with Damon Albarn. The pressure of the mainstream media spotlight undoubtedly contributed to the band's untimely demise after only two albums.
But just when it looked like they might be a kooky one-hit wonder, The Cardigans' did a handbrake turn into the album Gran Tursimo , showing off Nina's true calibre as a glorious rock frontwoman and a force to be reckoned with.
See how it fits my body! The duo mixed elements of trip hop, jazz, funk, drum n bass and disco. Murphy was like Catwoman; passionate and straight to the point, yet somehow aloof. She wanted you right now Dressing up was as fun as the dressing down. Janet English was determined to make the macho mosh pits at Spiderbait shows safe spaces for women to let loose. There was only so much she could do, but she certainly led by example.
Janet proved that women were not only welcome in rock'n'roll, they provided a different, much needed, kind of power that men couldn't.
And none of her bands would have been quite the same without her killer visual art skills. Liz Phair 's debut album Exile In Guyville is a brilliant, uncompromising, forthright piece of music that made her an instant indie rock star. But Phair's genius goes well beyond that significant first splash. Perhaps her most daring moment of the 90s came in with Whitechocolatespaceegg , which saw Phair step away from indie rock into the world of pop and come out shining. But, before then, we watched Ella perform with spunk and bags of energy on our music TV staples.
Sporting dreads and midriff tops, Ella was a relatable teen role model, fronting a band that would never be the cool kids. By the s, it should not have been significant that an Indigenous woman was a multi-ARIA winner, platinum recording artist and, most significantly, a role model for younger people.
But it was, and she took on the role with aplomb. Stereolab's music always felt like the sonic equivalent of my recurring dream of the perfect op shop: Though her name may forever be linked to that band's celebrated 90s output, Laetitia Sadier has been relentlessly creative all the while; recently collaborating with artists as diverse as Mombojo and Tyler, The Creator.
I still remember the first time I heard Dolores O'Riordan 's voice, over a cassette player at my mum's work hanging out one day after school. A fellow employee, a younger Irish woman, had brought an album into the office. As No Need To Argue played, I sat in silence, soaking up every iota of sound that was coming out of those speakers.
Listening to Dolores sing was like reading a book I couldn't put down, learning about the IRA, about the Easter Rebellion, about paparazzi and trappings of fame. Luckily for me, when I asked my mum's co-worker for a copy of the tape, she made me two. By the beginning of the 90s Kristin Hersh and her band Throwing Muses were already in the spotlight for their angular, kinetic pop and Hersh's raw and often stream of consciousness lyrics. Despite — or perhaps because of - battles with her mental health through the years, Kristin Hersh has always been an immensely powerful songwriter.
Whether working with her band or in solo acoustic mode, Kristin Hersh is captivating because she is not afraid to be herself — genuine, tortured, imaginative and a cracking guitarist too.
Few artists are as bewildering, infuriating, intriguing and brilliantly talented as Sinead O'Connor. Let's forget the politics and just stick with the music.
It's basically a beat and that voice. As good as the singles are, and that Prince cover is truly magnificent, that song is the musical heart of the album and one of the best recordings of the 90s. Two years later we got an album of jazz covers. I don't know why. Then the highly inconsistent Universal Mother. Nothing made sense anymore. But I kept listening, and still do today, because that voice is one of the best instruments I've ever heard. Already a well-established artist by the start of the 90s, Deborah Conway released one of our country's most outstanding pop albums, String Of Pearls , in Albums like Bitch Epic and My Third Husband showed that she shone when writing intriguingly dark songs, while the short-lived Ultrasound project took her to a cinematic, more experimental place midway through the decade.
Funny, smart, loud and powerful, these four ladies made songs that made you feel like you could take on anyone or anything! They were like the ultimate gang and I dearly would have loved to have been part of the mayhem and shenanigans they wreaked wherever they went.
These women also founded the Rock For Choice concerts. Needless to say, total legends. Although a four piece, Sydney band Clouds revolves around the distinct vocal harmonies and guitars of Jodi Phillis and Patricia Young. Their complex, lyrically and visually evocative songs evoked an intensity that didn't rely on having to shout and scream, pull off big riffs or ramp up the volume. Best not to fight it though, it's just the darkness that lies within. Jodi and Trisha showed us it can be a fascinating and revealing world worthy of exploring.
She was in lace bike pants, Adidas high tops, a bath towel wrapped on her head, and holding her own newborn? It's etched on my memory. She embraced all elements of being a woman and an artist, in her work and in her life and never shied away from it. In the 90s it was only right that she evolved into one of the most interesting artists of the decade, exploring a musical personality delving back into her jazz, punk and hip hop beginnings.
Her albums Homebrew and Man are essential listening. Her return after a year absence with the Blank Project album in was triumphant. I just wished she hadn't left it so long. A particularly scandalous highlight was her coffee table book Sex , featuring provocative and explicit images at the same time as her fifth studio album Erotica was released.
She garnered critical acclaim for her portrayal of Eva Peron in Evita , a role that saw her reinvent herself again as she took home a Golden Globe and Artist Achievement award. She has led the charge for countless female artists and continues to shock and inspire. Plenty more sacrilegious tunes and bottomless leotards where that came from.
It still bothers me that Alanis Morissette , and particularly her album Jagged Little Pill, has been mocked so mercilessly for having a raw and emotional approach. She has lent her voice to over albums and has sold more than million records, making her one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. After completing her last live concert in late , Ronstadt retired in She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in December , which left her unable to sing.
Linda Maria Ronstadt was born in in Tucson, Arizona , the third of four children of Gilbert Ronstadt — , a prosperous machinery merchant who ran the F. The family was featured in Family Circle magazine in Linda's father came from a pioneering Arizona ranching family and was of German , English , and Mexican ancestry.
She was a daughter of Lloyd Groff Copeman , a prolific inventor and holder of many patents. Copeman, with nearly patents to his name, invented an early form of the toaster, many refrigerator devices, the grease gun, the first electric stove, and an early form of the microwave oven. His flexible rubber ice cube tray earned him millions of dollars in royalties. Later, as a solo artist, she released Hand Sown Home Grown in , which has been described as the first alternative country record by a female recording artist.
She set records as one of the top-grossing concert artists of the decade. In the s, Ronstadt went to Broadway and garnered a Tony nomination for her performance in The Pirates of Penzance , teamed with the composer Philip Glass , recorded traditional music, and collaborated with the conductor Nelson Riddle , an event at that time viewed as an original and unorthodox move for a rock-and-roll artist.
This venture paid off, and Ronstadt remained one of the music industry's best-selling acts throughout the s, with multi-platinum-selling albums such as What's New , Canciones de Mi Padre , and Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind. She continued to tour, collaborate, and record celebrated albums, such as Winter Light and Hummin' to Myself , until her retirement in Ronstadt opened many doors for women in rock and roll and other musical genres by championing songwriters and musicians, pioneering her chart success onto the concert circuit, and being at the vanguard of many musical movements.
Ronstadt's early family life was filled with music and tradition, which influenced the stylistic and musical choices she later made in her career.
Growing up, she listened to many types of music, including Mexican music , which was sung by her entire family and was a staple in her childhood. She credits her mother for her appreciation of Gilbert and Sullivan and her father for introducing her to the traditional pop and Great American Songbook repertoire that she would, in turn, help reintroduce to an entire generation.
She has said that "all girl singers" eventually "have to curtsy to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday ". She's the greatest chick singer ever. A self-described product of American radio of the s and s, Ronstadt is a fan of its eclectic and diverse music programming. At age 14, Ronstadt formed a folk trio with her brother Peter and sister Gretchen. The group played coffeehouses, fraternity houses, and other small venues, billing themselves as "the Union City Ramblers" and "the Three Ronstadts", and they even recorded themselves at a Tucson studio under the name "the New Union Ramblers".
Ronstadt visited a friend from Tucson, Bobby Kimmel , in Los Angeles during Easter break from college in , and later that year, shortly before her eighteenth birthday, decided to move there permanently to form a band with him. The trio released three albums in a month period in — The band is best known for their hit single " Different Drum " written by Michael Nesmith prior to his joining the Monkees , which reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot chart as well as number 12 in Cashbox magazine.
Nearly 50 years later, the song remains one of Ronstadt's most popular recordings. The disc features all tracks from the first two Stone Poneys albums and four tracks from the third album.
Home Grown , in It has been called the first alternative country record by a female recording artist. Ronstadt provided the vocals for some commercials during this period, including one for Remington electric razors, in which a multitracked Ronstadt and Frank Zappa claimed that the electric razor "cleans you, thrills you Ronstadt's second solo album, Silk Purse , was released in March Recorded entirely in Nashville, it was produced by Elliot Mazer , whom Ronstadt chose on the advice of Janis Joplin , who had worked with him on the Cheap Thrills album.
The world is tearing by you, real fast, and all these people are looking at you. People see me in my 'girl-singer' suit. Several years before Ronstadt became what author Gerri Hirshey called the first "arena-class rock diva" with "hugely anticipated tours" she began her solo career touring the North American concert circuit.
But being on the road took its toll both emotionally and professionally. There were few "girl singers" on the rock circuit at the time, and they were relegated to "groupie level when in a crowd of a bunch of rock and roll guys", a status Ronstadt avoided.
At the time, she admired singers like Maria Muldaur for not sacrificing their femininity but says she felt enormous self-imposed pressure to compete with "the boys" at every level. Soon after she went solo in the late s, one of her first backing bands was the pioneering country-rock band Swampwater , which combined Cajun and swamp-rock elements in their music.
They toured with her for a short period in and played on Linda Ronstadt , her self-titled third album, from which the failed single, Ronstadt's version of Browne's " Rock Me on the Water ", was drawn. At this stage, Ronstadt began working with producer and boyfriend John Boylan. I was always a part of my productions. But I always needed a producer who would carry out my whims. But needing someone willing to work with her as an equal, Ronstadt asked Peter Asher , who came highly recommended to her by James Taylor's sister Kate Taylor , to help produce two of them: With the release of Don't Cry Now , Ronstadt took on her biggest gig to date as the opening act on Neil Young's Time Fades Away tour, playing for larger crowds than ever before.
Backstage at a concert in Texas, Chris Hillman introduced her to Emmylou Harris , telling them, "You two could be good friends", which soon occurred, resulting in frequent collaborations over the following years. Meanwhile, the album became Ronstadt's most successful up to that time, selling , copies by the end of Asher turned out to be more collaborative, and more on the same page with her musically, than any producer she had worked with previously.
Asher attributed the long-term success of his working relationship with Ronstadt to the fact that he was the first person to manage and produce her with whom there was a solely professional relationship.
Asher executive produced a tribute CD called Listen to Me: Buddy Holly , released September 6, , on which Ronstadt's version of Buddy Holly's " That'll Be The Day " appears among newly recorded versions of Holly's songs by various artists.
Many of these rhythms and sounds were part of her Southwestern roots. However, as early as , Ronstadt was being criticized by music "purists" for her "brand of music" which crossed many genres. Country Western Stars magazine wrote in that "Rock people thought she was too gentle, folk people thought she was too pop, and pop people didn't quite understand where she was at, but Country people really loved Linda.
Ronstadt is considered an "interpreter of her times", and has earned praise for her courage to put her "stamp" on many of her songs. Ronstadt's natural vocal range spans several octaves from contralto to soprano , and occasionally she will showcase this entire range within a single work. Ronstadt was the first female artist in popular music history to accumulate four consecutive platinum albums fourteen certified million selling, to date.
As for the singles, Rolling Stone pointed out that a whole generation, "but for her, might never have heard the work of artists such as Buddy Holly , Elvis Costello , and Chuck Berry. When interpreting, Ronstadt said she "sticks to what the music demands", in terms of lyrics. And I had to do them both in order to reestablish who I was. In the book Rock 'N' Roll Woman , author Katherine Orloff writes that Ronstadt's "own musical preferences run strongly to rhythm and blues, the type of music she most frequently chooses to listen to With this in mind, Ronstadt fuses country and rock into a special union.
By this stage of her career, Ronstadt had established her niche in the field of country-rock. Along with other musicians such as the Flying Burrito Brothers , Emmylou Harris , Gram Parsons , Swampwater , Neil Young , and the Eagles , she helped free country music from stereotypes and showed rockers that country was okay. However, she stated that she was being pushed hard into singing more rock and roll.
Author Andrew Greeley , in his book God in Popular Culture , described Ronstadt as "the most successful and certainly the most durable and most gifted woman Rock singer of her era. Although Ronstadt had been a cult favorite on the music scene for several years, was "remembered in the music biz as the year when year-old Linda Ronstadt belatedly happened.
In many instances, her own interpretations were more successful than the original recordings, and many times new songwriters were discovered by a larger audience as a result of her interpretation and recording.
Ronstadt had major success interpreting songs from a diverse spectrum of artists. The album showed a physically attractive Ronstadt on the cover but, more importantly, its critical and commercial success was due to a fine presentation of country and rock, with Heart Like a Wheel her first of many major commercial successes that would set her on the path to being one of the best-selling female artists of all time.
Ronstadt's interpretation peaked at number 2 on the country chart. The album itself was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy. Rolling Stone put Ronstadt on its cover in March It was the first of six Rolling Stone covers shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz. It included her as the featured artist with a full photo layout and an article by Ben Fong-Torres , discussing Ronstadt's many struggling years in rock n roll, as well as her home life and what it was like to be a woman on tour in a decidedly all-male environment.
It was climbing the pop and country charts but Heat Wave , a rockified version of the hit by Martha and the Vandellas , was receiving considerable airplay. The album featured a sexy, revealing cover shot and showcased Ronstadt the singer-songwriter, who composed two of its songs, "Try Me Again" co-authored with Andrew Gold and "Lo Siento Mi Vida". It also included an interpretation of Willie Nelson's ballad " Crazy ", which became a Top 10 Country hit for Ronstadt in early At the end of , Ronstadt surpassed the success of Heart Like a Wheel with her album Simple Dreams , which held the number 1 position for five consecutive weeks on the Billboard chart.
Simple Dreams spawned a string of hit singles on numerous charts. Simple Dreams became one of the singer's best-selling international-selling albums as well, reaching number 1 on the Australian and Canadian Pop and Country Albums charts.
The same year, she completed a concert tour around Europe. As Country Music magazine wrote in October , Simple Dreams solidified Ronstadt's role as "easily the most successful female rock and roll and country star at this time. Also in , she was asked by the Los Angeles Dodgers to sing the U. Ronstadt has remarked that she felt as though she was "artificially encouraged to kinda cop a really tough attitude and be tough because rock and roll is kind of tough business ," which she felt wasn't worn quite authentically.
By the mids, Ronstadt's image became just as famous as her music. The Rolling Stone cover story was accompanied by a series of photographs of Ronstadt in a skimpy red slip, taken by Annie Leibovitz. Ronstadt felt deceived by the photographer, not realizing that the photos would be so revealing.
She says her manager Peter Asher kicked Leibovitz out of the house when she visited to show them the photographs prior to publication. Leibovitz had refused to let them veto any of the photos, which included one of Ronstadt sprawled across a bed in her underpants. But I wouldn't choose to show a picture like that to anybody who didn't know me personally, because only friends could get the other sides of me in balance.
Her appearance on the cover of Time magazine under the banner "Torchy Rock" was also upsetting to Ronstadt, considering what the image appeared to project about the most famous woman in rock. Asher noted, "Anyone who's met Linda for 10 seconds will know that I couldn't possibly have been her Svengali. She's an extremely determined woman, in every area. To me, she was everything that feminism's about. In , Rolling Stone declared Ronstadt "by far America's best-known female rock singer.
Living in the USA was the first album by any recording act in music history to ship double-platinum over 2 million advance copies. At the end of that year, Billboard magazine crowned Ronstadt with three number-one Awards for the Year: Living in the USA showed the singer on roller skates with a newly short, permed hairdo on the album cover. Ronstadt continued this theme on concert tour promotional posters with photos of her on roller skates in a dramatic pose with a large American flag in the background.
By this stage of her career, she was using posters to promote every album and concert — which at the time were recorded live on radio or television. Ronstadt was also featured in the film FM , where the plot involved disc jockeys attempting to broadcast a Ronstadt concert live, without a competing station's knowledge. Ronstadt was persuaded to record "Tumbling Dice" after Mick Jagger came backstage when she was at a concert and said, "You do too many ballads, you should do more rock and roll songs.
Following the success of Living in the USA , Ronstadt conducted album promotional tours and concerts. I didn't have a trace of stage fright. I'm scared to death all the way through my own shows. But it was too much fun to get scared. He's so silly onstage, he knocks you over. I mean you have to be on your toes or you wind up falling on your face.
By the end of , Ronstadt had solidified her role as one of rock and pop's most successful solo female acts, and owing to her consistent platinum album success, and her ability as the first woman to sell out concerts in arenas and stadiums hosting tens of thousands of fans, Ronstadt became the "highest paid woman in rock". As Rolling Stone dubbed her "Rock's Venus", her record sales continued to multiply and set records themselves. By , Ronstadt had collected eight gold, six platinum, and four multi-platinum certifications for her albums, an unprecedented feat at the time.
Her Greatest Hits album would sell consistently for the next 25 years and in was certified by the RIAA for seven-times platinum over seven million U. In , Greatest Hits, Volume 2 was released and certified platinum. There is a new royalty ruling today's record charts.
In , Ronstadt released Mad Love , her seventh consecutive platinum-selling album. It was a straightforward rock and roll album with post-punk, new wave influences, including tracks by songwriters such as Elvis Costello, the Cretones , and musician Mark Goldenberg who played on the record himself. She also made the cover of Rolling Stone for a record-setting sixth time.
Mad Love entered the Billboard Album Chart in the Top Five its first week a record at that time and climbed to the number 3 position. Benatar praised Ronstadt by stating, "There are a lot of good female singers around. How could I be the best? Ronstadt is still alive! In the summer of , Ronstadt began rehearsals for the first of several leads in Broadway musicals. The Pirates of Penzance opened for a limited engagement in New York City's Central Park , eventually moving its production to Broadway, where it became a hit, running from January 8, , to November 28, Ronstadt received a Golden Globe nomination for the role in the film version.
When she met the opera superstar Beverly Sills , she was told, "My dear, every soprano in the world wants to play Mimi! However, the production was a critical and commercial disaster, closing after only a few nights. In , Ronstadt released the album Get Closer , a primarily rock album with some country and pop music as well. It remains her only album between and not to be officially certified platinum. It peaked at number 31 on the Billboard Album Chart. Ronstadt also filmed several music videos for this album which became popular on the fledgling MTV cable channel.
The album earned Ronstadt two Grammy Award nominations: Along with the release of her Get Closer album, Ronstadt embarked on a North American tour, remaining one of the top rock-concert draws that summer and fall. Ronstadt has remarked that in the beginning of her career she "was so focused on folk, rock and country" that she "got a bit bored and started to branch out, and Ronstadt eventually tired of playing arenas.
The second verse's lyrics pay tribute to Ronstadt: Ronstadt has said she wants to sing in places similar to the theatre of ancient Greece , where the attention is focused on the stage and the performer. Ronstadt's recording output in the s proved to be just as commercially and critically successful as her s recordings.
Between and , Ronstadt scored six additional platinum albums; two are triple platinum each with over three million U. By recording traditional pop , traditional country and traditional Latin roots Ronstadt resonated with a different fan base and diversified her appeal. In , Ronstadt produced and recorded an album pop standards later marketed in bootleg form titled Keeping Out of Mischief with the assistance of producer Jerry Wexler.
However, Ronstadt's displeasure with the final result led her, with regrets, to scrap the project. By , Ronstadt had enlisted the help of year-old conductor Nelson Riddle. The two embarked on an unorthodox and original approach to rehabilitating the Great American Songbook , recording a trilogy of traditional pop albums: The three albums have had a combined sales total of nearly seven million copies in the U.
The album design for What's New by designer Kosh was unlike any of her previous disc covers. It showed Ronstadt in a vintage dress lying on shimmering satin sheets with a Walkman headset. At the time, Ronstadt received some chiding for both the album cover and her venture into what was then considered "elevator music" by cynics, but remained determined to record with Riddle, and What's New became a hit. The album was released in September and spent 81 weeks on the Billboard Album Chart and held the number three position for a month and a half held out of the top spot Michael Jackson's]] Thriller and Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down and the RIAA certified it triple platinum over three million copies sold in the U.
The album earned Ronstadt another Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and critical raves, with Time magazine calling it "one of the gutsiest, most unorthodox and unexpected albums of the year.
Ronstadt faced considerable pressure not to record What's New or record with Riddle. What's New brought Riddle to a younger audience. According to Levinson, "the younger audience hated what Riddle had done with Frank Sinatra , which in was considered 'Vintage Pop'". Working with Ronstadt, Riddle brought his career back into focus in the last three years of his life. In the decade prior to Beatlemania, most of the great band singers and crooners of the 40s and 50s codified a half-century of American pop standards on dozens of albums It was her first foray into traditional jazz since her sessions with Jerry Wexler and her records with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, but this time with an intimate jazz combo.
The album was a quiet affair for Ronstadt, giving few interviews and making only one television performance as promotion. It reached number 2 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart but peaked at number on the main Billboard album chart.
Sandy West always seemed to me to be the Runaway that might be the girl that lived down the street.
While the band's notoriety seemed mostly focused on the lingerie-wearing Cherie or the leather-clad Joan, it was T-shirt-and-jeans for Sandy. The ideal "California blond," Sandy attempted to continue her music career after The Runaways disbanded but never found much success.
Sadly, Sandy West passed away October 21, , due to lung cancer, which had spread to her brain. Sign in or sign up and post using a HubPages Network account. Comments are not for promoting your articles or other sites.
Great hub here Some of these women I never heard of before, while the rest I have. Voted up for interesting! I saw Liz's name in the credits for an episode of Super Fun Night recently and I know she won a Grammy a couple of years ago for her work on the rebooted series. I think she is in an experimental phase musically and stretching her boundaries. I wonder where she is now and what she's up to at the moment. Debbie Harry is the most famous blonde pop star ever?
Madonna is by far the biggest female star ever and Agnetha Faltskog sang lead and also had some solo success on a group that sold more records than anyone except the Beatles and Elvis Madonna and Michael J.
Agnetha Faltskog is definitely the most beautiful blonde ever Beauty inside and out What a stupid list! Debbie Harry, the most famous blonde pop singer ever, not to mention one of the sexiest, isn't even on it. Why create a list and then miss out the one person who encapsulates the very person they are talking about.
Besides, it's a ridiculous idea for a list in the first place. Iwan van de Weer - Not on a list of blonde women because, well Susanna is not a blonde. However, some of these women are not even in the rock genre, or even close to it. Where is Courtney Love?!
Avril Lavigne is the best!! She's not just an incredibly god gifted voice owner, or an exceptionally cute blonde with the most unique lips, but also she's an awesome humanitarian and an inspiration to many: Other product and company names shown may be trademarks of their respective owners.
